Implementing the Remedy (Cleanup) Plan
DEP is currently reviewing a preliminary Draft Conceptual Design Generic Remedial Action Plan submitted by Olin, the company responsible for cleaning up non-public (mostly residential) properties. This draft outlines how Olin plans to carry out the cleanup. Olin will submit a final draft to DEP in May. Among the topics covered will be:
- Truck routes during cleanup
- Pre-cautions used to limit dust, air quality monitoring procedures
- Specifications about how restoration will be done after waste has been removed
Olin’s draft also included a projected schedule covering activities from the DEP’s release of the final plan in October 2007 through spring of 2009.
Block Meetings
Beginning in February, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been holding weekly meetings with property owners within the Newhall Remediation Project area. The meetings have been organized on a block by block basis for DEP to explain how cleanup will occur, listen to concerns and answer questions. These sessions have provided an opportunity for neighbors to meet each other and to talk with DEP about how the cleanup may personally affect them, whether or not their property has waste on it. By the end of April, every property owner will have been invited to a meeting to discuss how cleanup will occur on their block.
Reuse Planning
For the last year the Town of Hamden has been leading a process to examine how the former Hamden Middle School site can be reused and to explore opportunities on how to revitalize the Newhall Street Neighborhood. The Town’s reuse planning work ended in early March 2008. For more information see the REUSE section of this website.
